An Introduction To Today’s Game

Grandma’s house is going to have to wait. The woods are crawling with zombies, fairy tales have gone completely off the rails, and Little Red Riding Hood has apparently traded her basket of goodies for an arsenal of firearms.

Released for the Nintendo DS in 2008, Little Red Riding Hood’s Zombie BBQ turns Storyland into a shooting gallery. Pinocchio, the Three Little Pigs, and even Santa Claus have joined the undead, because why not?

Armed to the teeth and controlled largely with the stylus, Red blasts her way through one ridiculous encounter after another. It is weird, loud, completely over the top, and exactly the kind of forgotten DS game worth digging up.

Let’s Dive Into The Game

Little Red Riding Hood’s Zombie BBQ is an action rail shooter that takes familiar fairy tales, fills them with zombies, and hands you enough firepower to make sure they stay dead.

You play as either Little Red Riding Hood, who prefers guns, or Momotaro, the peach-born hero of Japanese folklore who fights with ninja stars.

Together they tear through twisted versions of stories like Pinocchio and The Three Little Pigs, all while trying to find the source of the zombie plague consuming Storyland.

Your character moves left and right across seven positions on the bottom screen, while the stylus handles the important part: aiming and shooting everything in sight.

Tap your character to crouch under attacks, then get back to unloading machine guns, shotguns and bombs into the undead.

Story mode is the main attraction, with Survival and Boss Attack giving you a couple of reasons to come back. The basic loop sounds simple, but the game gets surprisingly demanding once the screen starts filling with enemies.

And it will make you work for it. Checkpoints can be painfully scarce, turning one bad stretch into a trip back through a sizable chunk of the level.

The frame rate also has a habit of struggling when too many zombies join the party. Visually, it is an interesting mix of 2D characters and enemies running through 3D environments, with the bosses also rendered in 3D.

Spanish developer EnjoyUp was clearly pushing the DS pretty hard here, even if the results do not always hold together perfectly.

The soundtrack might be the best match for the game’s ridiculous personality. Instead of whimsical fairy-tale music, you get plenty of rock accompanying Red’s journey through zombie-infested Storyland.

The voice acting is just as silly as you would expect, although there unfortunately is not much of it. Zombie BBQ knows exactly what kind of game it is: violent, goofy and completely uninterested in taking Little Red Riding Hood seriously.

Why You Should Play This

The core loop is easy to learn, the modes give you a few ways to play, and the humor keeps things light. Just go in knowing that checkpoints are scarce, so patience helps. It will be a challenge.

As for where to play, the original DS cartridge is the way in, and it also runs on the 3DS family. A DSiWare version once existed too, but purchases on the 3DS eShop ended in March 2023. Secondhand copies can get expensive, so it pays to shop around.
