An Introduction To Today’s Game

There are games that shaped careers, and then there are games that almost nobody played.
Snatcher falls into both categories at once. Released on the Sega CD in 1994, it sold in the thousands, got buried under the system's reputation, and quietly became one of the most talked-about games in retro circles ever since.
Hideo Kojima wrote and directed it. A few thousand people bought it. The rest of us spent years trying to track it down.

Snatcher is a cyberpunk graphic adventure set in Neo Kobe City, 2047.
You play as Gillian Seed, a newly recruited Junker, which is basically a government-sanctioned detective assigned to hunt down humanoid robots called Snatchers.
These robots have been killing people, wearing their skin, and slipping back into society. Nobody knows how many are out there. That is the mystery, and it is a good one.

The game plays more like an interactive novel than anything else. You navigate through scenes using a menu of commands: look, investigate, move, ask.
You gather clues, talk to witnesses, and slowly pull the story forward. There is no cursor to drag around and no timed puzzles.
You pick from a list of actions and see what happens. The pace is deliberate, and in the early going it can test your patience. Act 1 is setup-heavy. By Act 2, the story has found its footing and things start moving.

Mixed into the investigation are shooting gallery sequences where you take aim at Snatcher robots across a three-by-three grid.
These were designed with the Justifier light gun in mind, and they work better with one.
Using a standard controller, the grid-locked targeting feels stiff. These segments are short, though, and they never overwhelm the experience.
What carries Snatcher is the writing and the world. Neo Kobe City feels lived in, full of small details you can poke at just to see what Gillian says.
The dialogue has a specific personality and the English localization, though sometimes criticized for flat delivery in spots, still holds together as a cohesive piece of work.

The CD audio score leans heavily on smooth jazz, which sounds like a strange choice for a dystopian thriller and somehow works completely.
The pixel art is rich for its era, and the game makes good use of the Sega CD's audio capabilities to give scenes real atmosphere. The design was heavily influenced by the original Blade Runner which adds to the overall experience.
Kojima's fingerprints are all over it. The cinematic framing, the meta-aware humor tucked into background details, the interest in memory and identity, it all reads as early drafts of ideas that would resurface in Metal Gear Solid years later.

Why You Should Play This
Snatcher never got a sequel in English. It never got a remaster. The PlayStation and Saturn ports that followed in Japan never crossed the ocean. For a long time, playing it meant either spending serious money on a physical copy or knowing your way around an emulator.
Today, emulation is the practical answer, and it works well. The Sega CD version is the one to play. It is the complete game, the only English release, and the version that most of the game's reputation is built on.
If you have any interest in cyberpunk fiction, detective stories, or Kojima's career before Metal Gear Solid, this is where a lot of it started.
It is not a long game. You can finish it in a weekend. Just go in knowing it is more story than game, and let Neo Kobe do the rest.
